Support for Clients Going Through Breakups, Separation, and Divorce
My heart aches for anyone going through a breakup. Having a relationship end can feel devastating and overwhelming, regardless of whether you were the one who ended it or not. It can also be a complex kind of loss. This person is still alive, yet there can be deep feelings of grief, loss, shock, anger, confusion, and longing.
How we approach therapy will depend on where you are in the breakup and healing process, and what kind of support you need right now. For some, especially in the early stages of a relationship breakdown, we are in crisis management mode and figuring out logistics. We might focus on building short term coping skills to help you get through each day, beginning to process that the relationship has ended, and creating a plan for the immediate next steps. This could include exploring living arrangements, identifying support people, and preparing for difficult conversations with your former partner.
Once things feel more stabilized, we can shift toward processing the relationship itself and supporting you in your healing journey. Through a parts based approach, we might explore the different and sometimes conflicting thoughts and feelings that come up for you. Often there are parts that still love or hope, parts that feel angry or betrayed, or parts that are trying to protect you from ever being hurt like this again. We may also look at the relationship through an attachment lens, bringing awareness to how your past experiences shaped the dynamic between you and your partner.
Wherever you are right now is okay. We will work together to figure out what feels most supportive for you right now, and go from there.
